How to Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT, Gemini & Perplexity

February 28, 20267 min read

Being cited by an AI answer engine is the new front page of the internet. When ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity names your business in an answer — and links to you — you capture a high-intent buyer at the exact moment they are deciding. Here is how to make that happen, step by step.

Start with crawlability and identity. AI engines can only cite what they can read. Make sure your pages return real HTML content (not an empty JavaScript shell), that your robots.txt welcomes AI crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot, and — most importantly — that your title, meta description, and structured data state plainly what you offer. Many businesses are mis-described by AI simply because their own metadata says something narrower or different from what they actually sell.

Add an llms.txt file. This emerging convention gives AI engines a single, plain-text summary of your site: what you do, your key pages, and how to describe you. It is a low-effort, high-leverage way to control your narrative with the engines that now summarize you to customers.

Write answer-ready content. Generative engines preferentially quote content that directly answers a specific question in a self-contained paragraph. Use real question phrasing as your headings ('What is the best…', 'How do I…'), then answer in the first two sentences before elaborating. Add FAQ sections with FAQPage schema so the engine can map questions to answers unambiguously.

Build structured data. Schema.org markup — Organization, Product, Service, and FAQPage — tells engines what entity you are and what you offer. This is the difference between an engine guessing and an engine knowing. Consistent structured data across your pages compounds into a clear, citable identity.

Earn authority and consistency. Engines cite sources they trust. That trust comes from third-party mentions, citations, reviews, and — critically — consistent information about your business everywhere it appears. Conflicting names, categories, or descriptions across the web make an engine less likely to confidently recommend you.

Finally, measure across every engine. Each engine has different coverage and updates on a different cadence, so you cannot manage what you do not track. PulseRank handles all of the above: it makes your site crawlable and correctly identified, publishes answer-ready content and structured data, generates your llms.txt, and tracks your citation rate across Google, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, and Google AI Overviews — so you know exactly where you stand and what is moving the needle.
