Search Engine Optimization
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the practice of improving a website's content, structure and authority so it ranks higher in traditional search-engine results pages (SERPs) — primarily Google — and attracts more organic traffic. SEO focuses on blue-link rankings rather than AI-generated answers.
Google AI Overviews
AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience) is Google's feature that generates a summarized AI answer at the top of search results, pulling from multiple sources before showing any traditional blue links. Appearing inside an AI Overview requires GEO and AEO techniques, not just classic SEO.
llms.txt — Machine-Readable Identity
llms.txt is a plain-text file placed at the root of a website (e.g. /llms.txt) that tells AI crawlers and large language models who the business is, what it offers and how its content should be interpreted. It is the AI-era equivalent of robots.txt — a direct signal from site owner to language model.
FAQ
Glossary questions, answered
What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO?
SEO optimizes for ranking in traditional search results (blue links). GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — optimizes for being cited inside AI-generated answers from engines like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — optimizes for being selected as the direct answer by AI assistants and answer-first search features like Google's AI Overviews. GEO and AEO overlap significantly; both build on strong SEO foundations while adding AI-specific signals like structured data, answer-first content and machine-readable identity files.
Why do these terms matter for my business?
A growing share of searches and information queries never reach a traditional results page — users accept the AI-generated answer and stop. If your content is not structured and signalled in ways that AI engines can parse and cite, your business is invisible in those answers even if it ranks well in classic SERPs. GEO and AEO are how you ensure your brand appears in the places where attention is going.
Do I need to understand all these terms to use PulseRank?
No. PulseRank applies GEO and AEO techniques automatically — adding structured data, answer blocks, llms.txt and multi-engine tracking without requiring you to become an expert. This glossary exists so you understand what PulseRank is doing and why it matters.
Is llms.txt an official standard?
llms.txt is an emerging community-driven convention, not an official W3C or IETF standard. It was proposed in 2024 and has been adopted by a growing number of sites as AI crawlers become more prevalent. PulseRank generates and serves a llms.txt file for every connected site.
